History of the American Wirehair Cat
What is an American Wirehair
Cat? The American wirehair has
a coarse, wiry coat that makes it different from other cat breeds.
Original wire-haired cats have been around since American Colonial
times but have died out with natural breeding. This rare breed
was discovered in contemporary times through a litter of 6 barn
cats in 1966 New York.
Every American Wirehair
cat can trace its ancestry back to one of the kittens of that
litter: Adam, who had sparse, wiry, crimped hair that coiled,
even on the whiskers. The American Wirehair
Cat Temperament can be described as friendly and gentle.
It is closely related to the American Shorthair Cat and gets
along well with children and other animals, including dogs.
Quiet, reserved and extremely lovable, the American wirehair
requires just an occasional light brushing. The American wirehair grows to be a medium to large sized cat: it
is well-boned with well-developed muscles and has large, round
eyes and a pronounced muzzle and chin.

American Wirehair
Cat Fact:
The
coat of an American wirehair feels silky soft when stroked in
one direction; however, when stroked in the opposite direction
can feel as hard-edged as steel.
