History of the Chartreux Cat
Chartreux cats date back as early as the
16th century. According to French documents, Carthusian
monks at the Grenoble monastery kept Chartreux cats to keep
mice and rats in check. These are the same monasteries
famous for the "Chartreuse liquor".
The
Chartreux cat has a hefty body that is solidly muscled and has
broad shoulders and a deep chest. This cat grows
to medium length and its head is round with powerful jaws.
The Chartreux cat's legs are short and fin-boned contrary to
the heavy-bone structure of the rest of its body. It has
a double coat that is soft and lush. The fur is slightly
wooly in texture making its dense fur water resistant.
The gray coat also has silver highlights set off by brilliant
orange eyes. You can find Chartreux cats only in the color blue.
The
Chartreux cat personality can be described as gentle and playful
but has a tiny voice that belies its muscled bone structure.
The Chartreux is also highly intelligent and adaptable.
