History of the Exotic Shorthair Cat
Where did the Exotic Shorthair
come from? The
exotic shorthair came about when breeders of american shorthairs
interbred their cats with persian cats in order to improve the
coat. Cross-breeding succeeded but kittens were both longhair
and shorthair.
In 1967 the
Cat Fanciers Association officially established the 'Exotic
Shorthair' cat breed to recognize the cross-breeding of diverse
cat breeds which included abyssinians, burmese, american shorthairs
and persians. Currently, only persian cats can be legally
used in cross-breeding to produce an 'Exotic'. How can
you recognize an 'Exotic Shorthair' Cat? This is a stocky,
heavy-boned cat with brilliant eyes that are round and full.
Eyes sit level but are far apart in width.
Exotics have
a full face and small ears with round tips: ears are also far
apart. Their legs although short when compared with other breeds
are thick and strong. Exotic paws are large, strong and firm
and its coat is extremely dense but plush to the touch. The
Exotic Shorthair's coat can be in any variety of colors and
patterns. This cat's personality is quiet, friendly but
lively and rarely makes a sound. The Exotic is sweet, loyal
and very affectionate.

Exotic Shorthair
Cat Fact:
When an
exotic shorthair female has a litter of kittens, not even
experienced breeders can predict which kittens will turn out
to be longhair cats and which will be shorthair cats.
