In general, cats are healthy when they have bright
eyes, a shiny coat and a keen sense of alertness about them.
Healthy cats have a good appetite and constantly groom to keep themselves
clean. Socializing and interacting with other household members
is also considered healthy behavior.
But how can you know if your cat is sick or needs
to be taken to the veterinarian? Each cat is different and has its
own normal routine or behavior. If your cat is acting out of its
normal pattern it may be time to consult a vet. Did your cat suddenly
lose its appetite? Did your kind and gentle cat drastically change
its personality overnight?
As catowners it is our responsibility to know our
cats, their routine and what is normal behavior for them. Cats cannot
vocalize if they are sick, hurt or are in pain but will change their
general pattern of behavior and sometimes personality alerting us
to their discomfort. If an otherwise affable and affectionate cat
becomes hostile there could be something wrong. If an otherwise
sociable cat becomes more and more distant it could be due to more
than a need for privacy.
