History of the Selkirk Rex Cat
The Selkirk Rex came about through a spontaneous
genetic mutation that occurred in the late 1980s which resulted
in a cat with a naturally curly coat. The naturally occurring
cat was found in Wyoming and cross-bred with a purebred black
Persian cat.
The resulting
cross-breed was a large, heavy-boned cat with a soft, plush
coat that was full and extremely curly and likened to lamb's
wool. Too much combing of the Selkirk Rex cat's coat while
its wet could straighten out the curls. This is a large,
sturdy, very healthy cat. The Selkirk Rex cat personality can
be described as very patient and good with children.

Selkirk Rex
Cat Fact:
Selkirk
Rex Kittens actually shed their first curly coat. After the initial
coat has been discarded a coarser hair begins to grow until the
entire coat is fully replaced. This 'adult coat' becomes fully
developed when the kitten is 10 months old.
