Why do Cats present dead (or half-dead) animals to you?

Why do cats present dead (or
half-dead) animals to their owners? Some cat owners are
distressed when their cat brings dead lizards or rats into the
home and become even more fearful when the dead prey is presented to them. But why
do cats and kittens do this?
There are many reasons that could account for this behavior.
First, when the cat was young perhaps it wasn't fully trained or
didn't fully practice the hunting and killing aspect of prey.
The cat is simply playing with its prey as if it were another
kitten or toy.
Also, your cat or kitten might see you as if you were just another "kitten" in a
shared den and is trying to bring the prey to you so you both can
learn how to play and kill your own prey.
