Why do cat eyes appear to glow?
by
KittyKondo.com
Behind the cat's eyes there is an area called the dark pupil
with its light-sensitive cell layers (the retina). There is a
special layer of cells behind the retina, called the tarpetum
which actually reflects back any light that hasn't been
absorbed on its way through.
This layer of cells acts like a reflecting mirror and is the reason
for that gold or green shine we see in the cat's eye when a
glare of light is being showered in its direction.
